Carolyn Park Middle School's Robotics team, the "Electric Eagles", won first place for their City Shaper themed research project at the 2019 Northshore Qualifier robotics, Saturday December 14th. They also were awarded an alternate for championship award, inviting them to be on the waitlist for the state LEGO First Robotics competition in January 2020.
The Robotics Challenge this year was called "City Shaper" which challenged teams to focus on unused property in our community which could be utilized. The team members chose the Northshore Mall in a effort to revitalize this part of their city for community use, as many of the anchor stores have closed and is mostly sitting unused. The team used survey responses from over 300 students, staff, and community stakeholders to come up with a revitalization plan for the deteriorating mall and parking lot. The team focused their project on re-purposing the mall and surrounding area for community use, including a special needs playground, community pool, basketball courts, and community garden. These students also researched the needs of their local homeless population as well as those with physical and/or mental disabilities. They included the current food court as a kitchen to feed the homeless population and community members with disabilities, as well as a shelter in the mall to help house those in need.  Due to the innovative ideas and depth of research the Electric Eagles used to complete their project, they won the first place research project award this year.
